Today’s message is on opioids in particular Fentanyl.
As I watched 20/20 the other night it was clear to me, we have an opioid problem in the US. Prince and so many others have died from this drug. This drug is legal with a prescription; however purchasing it on the streets, can kill you.
What is Fentanyl
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is much like morphine but 50 to 100 times more potent. It is a prescription drug that is used for severe pain after surgery.
Why Should We Care
Fentanyl is a prescription drug; however, it is being ordered from China by drug dealers, who are using it with other substances such as heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamines.
It takes a very little amount fentanyl to produce a high, so by mixing it with other substances, makes it a cheaper option.
The drug sellers make the pills up and put a number stamp on them, so they look like an actual pill. The user has no knowledge they are buying their choice of drug-laced with fentanyl. This is where they end up overdosing and dying.
Is Fentanyl Addicting
Yes, fentanyl can be addicting, and doctors are instructed to warn their patients of this danger. The problem if a person becomes dependent on Fentanyl they have a hard time stopping the use of it due to the painful withdrawal symptoms which can include:
- muscle and bone pain
- sleep problems
- cold flashes with goosebumps
- diarrhea and vomiting
- uncontrollable leg movements
- severe cravings.
When their prescription runs out, and they cannot refill it they may take to the streets to find something less costly and more access able.
Is there an Alternative?
It’s sad that all types of people are becoming addicted to these drugs and give up on themselves and life. It is effecting everyone from singers, actors, lawyers, nurses, housewives, and students to mention a few.
Are there alternative and natural ways of dealing with pain? Is there some type of technology?
I found several, acupuncture, essential oils, including CBD or Hemp Oil, and Quell wearable technology. These may not take effect as fast as Fentanyl; however, you will not become addicted or overdose and die. Do your research.
I personally know several people who started out with pain killers from the doctor, became addicted and started buying off the street. Not too long after they lost everything, gave up their families and life just to get the drug.
Drug dealers don’t care whether you overdose or not. They just want to make a pill that gets you addicted, so you’ll keep coming back for more.
The dealers that mix fentanyl with other substances only care about the money they make.
One case on 20/20 made it so clear, their report included one dealer whose girlfriend and mother of his children overdosed on the very pills he was making out of his garage.
What Can We Do?
We need to find a better way of dealing with pain, doctors need to stop handing these opioids out like candy, and we need to be more responsible and ask our doctors questions about the pills they prescribe for us.
Please inform yourself on this, because you never know who you may be able to help in the future. For more information on fentanyl and the crucial things to remember about it, please visit the National Institute of Drug Abuse.
